Compare the two articles. If America’s schools really are becoming obsolete in conjunction with the future of the country (Revolutionary Wealth article), how do the students’ visions of technology (Visions Article) in schools compare to the need of a changing school system? Is incorporating technology into this classroom the only way to use technology in schools?
Do you think the boredom of students in the school systems today is relevant to the fact that schools are becoming obsolete?
“Revolutionary Wealth”
ReplyDeleteOn page 357 Toffler states that the schools “fail to prepare students for their roles as consumers and prosumers. Nor does this system, by and large, help kids cope with the rising complexity and new life options they face in sex, marriage, ethics, and other dimensions of the emerging society. Least of all does it succeed in introducing more than a tiny fraction of them to the enormous pleasure of learning itself.” How do you feel about this statement? Do you feel that this is true about schools? Are we not preparing students properly for the future and is this based solely on the lack of funding to incorporate technology?
The term “factory-style” schools is used frequently throughout the article. This refers to the order and development of public school systems during industrialism. The author seems to be arguing that our focus in public schools today is the same, “a mass education system that fit neatly into the matrix of mass production, mass media, mass culture, mass sports, mass entertainment, and mass politics.” Do you feel like that our public schools are still “factory-style”? What have been your experiences that influence your opinion?
“Visions 2020.2”
The students who participated in the 2020.2 study developed some pretty good ideas for advanced technology in the schools. Which idea was most realistic to you in terms of being helpful in your classroom?
Do you think the handheld computer is something you can see being implemented in the future? This article was written only 5 years ago and already most of the technology the children suggested is here, so anything is possible!
